GEARING UP FOR THIS YEAR’S COLD AND FLU SEASON

If you are one of many who have battled the harsh effects of past cold and flu seasons, then make this year different. There is an old Chinese proverb that is simple, but true, “Prevention is better than cure.” Don’t let this coming cold and flu season get you down. There are many ways to build the immune system and one of the most efficient ways is through herbal supplementation. Tonic herbs such as Huang Qi, a Chinese herb more commonly known as Astragalus root, has been used for centuries to help build and strengthen the immune system, as well as increase the body’s natural defenses against outside pathogens and seasonal change. Astragalus, along with polysaccharide-rich tonic mushrooms such as Reishi, Maitake and Shiitake, can play a vital role in supporting a healthy defense system. Other herbs, traditionally used for treating viral infections such as Chinese Licorice root and Isatis, can be extremely valuable as well. It is important to note that tonic herbs are meant to tonify and build the system and should not be taken in duration of a cold or flu. More appropriate surface clearing herbs such as Echinacea, Goldenseal, Honeysuckle, Ginger or Peppermint are called for when under the weather. Another herb worth mentioning is Green tea. Japanese research has shown that Green tea’s active components known as polyphenols have remarkable antiviral properties. In fact, these polyphenols can prevent the influenza virus from attaching to normal cells, thus blocking flu infection.

Ligustrum fruit: Yin and Essence tonic; recently used in many immune-enhancing formulas.*
