TRUTH ABOUT SUPERCRITICAL Co2 extracts
Hi Laurie, My name is Mike Bias, I am the Vice President of Paradise Herbs, Inc. We might be interested in some of your Co2 extracts, if they can truly meet this criteria. We are a high quality extract line, in which our products are all a true full spectrum extracts. This means that we run an HPLC analysis on all raw botanicals and ensure that our finished extracts contain all compounds found in the original herb and in their original related ratios just concentrated. I noticed that in your report of Supercritical fluid extraction you state that you are able to “precipitate different fractions of the extract” Can you extract an herb using Co2 and concentrate its compounds without altering or fractionating their natural ratios. If we were to run an HPLC on the original botanical and the finished Co2 extract would they be completely identical just concentrated. This is what our standards as TCM herbalists need. Thanks Mike
Mr. Bias, Laurie Selage forwared you request regarding CO2 extraction. Supercritical fluid extraction is fairly specific for lipophilic compounds. Botanicals such as ginger are well suited, since CO2 will extract gingerols and volatile oils. The majority of water-soluble compounds are not extracted. Therefore, an HPLC analysis of both raw and finished products may have similar profiles for oil-soluble compounds, but not for water-solubles. You can see from the above communication that co2 extractions are not true full spectrum extracts, but fractionized extracts that only extract for the fat (lipid) soluble constituents. This is why Paradise Herbs will never use co2 extracts, even though we have access to working with several companies in both Europe and the United States who utilize this method.
